The Master Document.
Obtaining the official Death Certificate is the foundation for settling any estate in New Zealand. We break down the timeline and requirements.
Step-by-Step BDM Process
The Department of Internal Affairs (Births, Deaths and Marriages) manages all death registrations in NZ. While the process is efficient, there are strict timelines you must follow.
1. Medical Certificate
A doctor or nurse must first issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. This is not the Death Certificate, but it's required to start the registration process.
2. Registering the Death
In NZ, a death must be registered with BDM within 3 working days of the burial or cremation. Usually, your funeral director handles this for you.
3. Ordering the Certificate
Once registered, you can order the official Death Certificate. This 'Master Document' is required for banks, lawyers, and insurance companies. Cost is approx. $33.
The Timeline
It usually takes **3-5 working days** for BDM to process a registration. If you use a funeral director, they often include the $33 fee in their final bill and have the certificate sent directly to you.
Why you need 3-5 copies
Many institutions (like banks) will ask to see an 'original' or a 'certified copy.' If you're managing a complex estate, order multiple copies upfront to avoid delays.
